Questions of the Week from June 2015
Monday 29th June's question of the week celebrated the start of Wimbledon!
The fastest serve at Wimbledon was 143 miles per hour. If the tennis court is about 24 metres long, how long did it take the ball to travel the length of the court?
Topic: Speed and Converting Units
Answer:
Step 1: There are approximately 1609 metres in a mile. 143 x 1609 = 230087, so the ball was travelling at 230087 metres per hour.
Step 2: 230087 ÷ 60 ÷ 60 = 63.913 metres per second.
Step 3: 24 ÷ 63.913 = 0.3755 seconds
