Questions of the Week from April 2015

Did you know that position words, like behind and below, are part of the Year 1 maths curriculum? Monday 27th April's question of the week was taken from our latest Year 1 Mental Arithmetic Pack:

Year 1 Position and Direction
Topic: Words For Position
Answer: Bob is behind Don

Monday 20th April's question was taken from the Edexcel 2010 Foundation Linear GCSE Maths Paper 2. It's easy to forget some of the easier topics. Try our new GCSE revision page for topic lists to help with GCSE maths revision:

Topic: Naming 3D Shapes
Answer:
i) Cuboid
ii) Sphere
iii) Triangular Based Pyramid

Monday 13th April's question showed how maths comes in handy when thinking about healthy eating:

Men should be eating about 2500 calories each day.

Jordan decides to check how many calories he has had, so he works out what he has eaten through the day:

Breakfast: A bowl of porridge (220 calories)
Morning Snack: A banana (90 calories)
Lunch: A ham sandwich (350 calories) and a bag of crisps (140 calories)
Afternoon Snack: An apple (90 calories) and a chocolate bar (195 calories)
Dinner: 2 slices of pizza (500 calories) and chips (365 calories)

Has Jordan eaten more or less than the recommended amount? What is the difference?

Topic: Addition and Subtraction Problems with 3-Digit Numbers
Answer: 220 + 90 + 350 + 140 + 90 + 195 + 500 + 365 = 1950
He has eaten less than the recommended amount. 2500 - 1950 = 550 calories less

Key Stage 2 SATs Number Sequence

Topic: Number Sequences

Answer: The numbers in the sequence must end in 00, 25, 50 or 75, so the only two numbers that will appear in the sequence are 650 and 900.
